What is panning?
Panning distributes a sound between the left and right channels, which moves its position in the stereo field. In linear pan the amplitudes of the two channels change linearly: at the centre each one is 0.5 and the total power drops by half (−3 dB), so the sound seems weaker. In constant power pan the amplitudes follow cosine and sine and at the centre each is about 0.7 (−3 dB): the total power stays constant and the perceived loudness does not change while the sound moves from one side to the other.
