The classic waveforms
The classic waveforms differ in their harmonic spectrum: the harmonics, that is the multiples of the fundamental frequency, and their amplitudes. The sine wave contains only the fundamental. The sawtooth contains all the harmonics, with amplitude 1/n. The square wave contains only the odd ones, again with amplitude 1/n. The triangle wave contains the odd ones but with amplitude 1/n², and some harmonics in phase inversion: this is why it sounds softer, while sawtooth and square are brighter.
